Clear, consistent information about the plan of care presented during interdisciplinary rounds, is important to patients and their families. This is particularly essential in the high-stress environment of the pediatric intensive care unit, yet it is equally important in all inpatient and outpatient encounters. Simply including family in interdisciplinary rounds is not sufficient to support the understanding that is necessary to provide the best outcomes for patients and increased patient/family satisfaction. The implementation of patient/family-centered interdisciplinary rounds is a nurse-driven, evidence-based process utilizing teach-back with substantial impact. Attendees will have a clear outline for implementation of patient/family-centered rounds in any healthcare environment.
Attendees will be able to:
1. Identify the relationship between effective communication with patients/families and patient outcomes
2. Analyze the impact of interdisciplinary rounds on patient/family, patient outcomes, and evaluation of quality of care
